Crossbow Pesticide
Is it safe to eat a possum caught and killed in a suburban area?
I found one in my back yard and killed it with my crossbow. I butchered and skinned it and now it’s in my freezer. I’ve read they’re edible and taste pretty good. However, I’m afraid that since It caught it in a suburban area it may have ingested toxins like pesticides or rat poison recently.
Well, I assume you’re not squeamish, reading how you obtained it… if you remove the innards, then most of the toxins, if any, will have been removed with the liver and spleen. It won’t be an organic possum, so I would say the risk of unknown toxins is too great to be worth the experiment. I was happy to eat rabbit caught and butchered on a farm on which I worked, once it was well cooked of course… but that’s not from a residential area, and possums’ diet includes more garbage than that of a rabbit. I’d throw out the possum and hunt in a more rural area.
